Matthew trained at the Royal Academy of Music, studying flute and piano, and at Bristol University, where he held an honorary visiting fellowship. A former member of the Las Palmas Symphony Orchestra, he has undertaken session and variety work and lectured on music for the Workers' Educational Association; he also teaches privately. He currently combines accompanying the Ladies' Choir with his work as organist and choirmaster at St Mary's Church, Almondsbury. His extra-musical activity is gardening, which he enjoys with his wife Kathryn, a pianist.
